There are many reasons why people find themselves in debt and there are a number of ways of both avoiding it and getting out of it. However, when debts are no longer under control and become unmanageable it is likely that you’ll need to take a close look at your finances and get some debt advice.

It is for this reason alone that CARA has spent over a 4 years offering debt help for those in need. But as you would expect, we don’t just advise our clients that an IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement) is the only option. Our mission is to help consumers find the right solution to their debt by following our ‘best advice model’ which carefully analyses your financial position and together with our trained advisors, helps us make our recommendation to your best way of becoming debt free.

Different debt solutions
There are five main debt solutions for dealing with debts over £15,000. For very serious debt problems, the three most common ways are shown in red.

An IVA is often the fairest way forward for both you and your creditors if you owe more than £15,000 and are struggling to meet your repayments. This is only a summary and when we know more we will be able to identity the right debt solution for you.

More about the IVA
The Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) is an important piece of government legislation that appeared in 1986. It allows you to avoid the trauma of bankruptcy and it suits many people who owe more than £15,000 if they are in regular employment.

The IVA is a legally binding agreement - it protects you against any further action from people who are chasing you for money. You can realistically be debt-free in sixty months.

With an IVA, you agree with your creditors that you'll pay only what you can afford. That means a single payment each month over the five-year period. Your creditors agree to write off the debt you can't afford to repay and leave you alone. Do you qualify for an IVA? Find out by contacting Debt Free Direct.

1. IVA: the fairest way to solve serious debt problems
An IVA or Individual Voluntary Arrangement is a legally binding agreement between you and your creditors to repay a proportion of your debt, over what is normally 5 years. Your home is protected and you’ll not receive the calls and letters you may be currently receiving chasing repayments.

Who can apply and get an IVA agreed very much depends on individual circumstances. If you call us we’ll be able to offer you our ‘best advice’ and if an IVA is truly your best alternative, we’ll create a proposal for your creditors to review and hopefully agree to.

If you have more questions you can read more frequently asked IVA questions, or call us and talk to one of our specialist advisers.

CARA aims to be one of the UK’s number 1 IVA company and have helped hundreds to become debt free through IVA’s and other successful debt solutions.

2. Debt management
Debt management companies negotiate with the people you owe money to on your behalf. Some of them usually charge you for this service. The idea is to try and persuade creditors to lower your monthly repayments so you have the advantage of making smaller payments over a longer period of time.

There are two potential drawbacks. The first is that you have to make sure you don't choose an unscrupulous debt management company who overcharge you for their services. The second is that you will still have to pay off all your debts, often for longer periods thanks to rolled-up interest. That means you can simply end up owing more and more.

If our Best Advice Model shows that a management plan is the way forward for you, we'll help you achieve the best possible plan and make sure your debts don't grow or get rolled up. We'll make sure you don't get charged any fees and that your creditors will pay the costs of setting up the plan. If it's not the best solution for your financial situation we'll let you know what else is available to you, whether that be an IVA, Consolidation Loan or another option.

More about debt management
Debt Management for many is a way of stopping the interest growing on debts that you’re struggling to repay, and stopping the letters and calls asking for repayments to be made. However, unlike an IVA you will be paying the whole sum back.

After careful assessment of your debts, assets and income, if a debt management plan is the best way to become debt free, we’ll help you get a plan up and running. As long as you maintain the repayments you should have your finances under control.

It is worth pointing out again that there are a number of debt management companies that will charge you for this service and you may also pay interest on the debt as well. CARA will NOT charge you for setting up a plan, the costs will be paid by your creditors, and the amount you owe will freeze and reduce by the amount you agree to pay each month.

:3. Bankruptcy - a serious debt solution
Health: Bankruptcy is a severe last resort for the seriously indebted. It protects you from your creditors and allows you to start afresh but you need to think carefully about the implications it will have.

Subject to certain exemptions, bankruptcy means your assets (for example life insurance, pensions) are sold off and the money used to pay your creditors. You will probably have to sell your house.

Your situation is advertised in newspapers and bankruptcy brings with it other restrictions. Those include having bank accounts and credit cards closed. Your landlord will be informed and for certain professions you run a risk of losing your job.

Our Best Advice Model is designed to give you a fair assessment of the choices open to you. There may be a better debt solution than bankruptcy - see how an IVA can help if you or your partner owe more than £15,000 and either of you are in regular employment.

4. Debt Consolidation
For some people in financial difficultly, consolidating all their existing debts into a single loan can be a good idea. It depends on your level of debt, income and current repayments but lower monthly repayments are often possible.

Consolidation may not be helpful if you have debts over £15,000 and are struggling to make repayments. That's because taking on more financial responsibility is likely to make things worse, particularly if the loan is secured on a property. An IVA may be the best choice in this case, but we can tell you more when you call us.

Our Best Advice Model will tell you whether or not consolidation is a good choice in your own situation. If it isn't, we can take you through the other options available so you can decide the best path to take. If a consolidated loan is genuinely the best solution, CARA will search the market at no extra cost to you and find a loan that meets your needs.
