Lamivudine (Epivir/ 3TC) Please read this factsheet carefully together with the patient information leaflet before taking your medicine. Lamivudine, also known as 3TC or Epivir belongs to a class of drugs called nucleoside analogues or nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). NRTIs are used for the treatment of HIV infection, in combination with other anti-HIV drugs. Taking your lamivudine
Do not run out of lamivudine. If you are going on holiday and need additional supplies - tell your
doctor. Your pharmacist will check that you have enough to last you until your next appointment. Side effects
Many of these side-effects are transient and will usually disappear a few weeks after starting lamivudine. If you experience any of these side effects or any other new symptoms after you start lamivudine, tell your doctor who will advise you what to do. Do NOT stop taking your Lamivudine without consulting your doctor first. It is important that you tell your doctor so that he or she can discuss other treatment options with you. Lactic acidosis has been reported with the use of nucleoside analogues. Your doctor will be monitoring your lactate levels, but inform your doctor if you experience the following symptoms: nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, rapid, deep breathing or muscle weakness.
