Active Fat

Is your lifestyle leaving you vulnerable to the dangers of Active Fat?
Carrying excess weight around your middle is not healthy for you and can increase your risk of getting cancer, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. So we've teamed up with City and Hackney PCT to get Hackney residents measuring their waistlines.

Risk of heart disease
Carrying too much fat around your middle is much more dangerous to your heart than you might think. Most people think it's carrying around all that extra weight that puts strain on your heart, but it's actually the fat cells themselves that are really active, producing toxic substances that cause damage which can lead to heart disease. This is why it is referred to as ‘Active Fat’.

Our video (on the right of this page) shows you how an ‘Active Fat’ cell can cause serious damage in your arteries. After watching the video, take the first step towards improving your health by completing our quick and simple Lifestyle Check.

Take action now
If your lifestyle is leaving you open to the dangers of ‘Active Fat’ and developing cancer, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, then take action immediately. You can start by taking our quick and easy Lifestyle Check.

Visit our food labelling section too where you can read about our campaign for traffic light food labels and get details of how to email your views on food labelling to your Member of the European Parliament (MEP).

Dangers of developing cancer
Having ‘Active Fat’ can also cause harm and damage to your insides and lead to various forms of cancer. Visit the Cancer Research website to see a video showing the devastating damage that ‘Active Fat’ can cause, as well as ten top tips to help you take action and fight it.

Risk of developing Type 2 diabetes
As well as the dangers of developing heart disease and cancer, carrying extra weight can lead to Type 2 diabetes too. Watch the video on the Diabetes UK website to see what those cells in your mid-region are up to, and then get active yourself in fighting them by taking the diabetes risk assessment
